Sights, Sounds, and Smells Jul 20, 2011
Sham Shui Po is a district on Kowloon in Hong Kong. I got the opportunity to stay in Sham Shui Po during a college project. When we first got there we had to walk from the MTR late at night with all of our bags. The area had only locals around that were all glaring at us, which was a little unnerving. However, over the next days/weeks, Sham Shui Po really began to grow on us. There are so many unique sights, sounds, and smells (stinky tofu...try it) that are hard to find in the real touristy areas. Sham Shui Po felt very safe...the locals stopped glaring after a few days of seeing us walk up and down the street a hundred times. The laundry lady was unbelievably nice (and very inexpensive).

The district is within walking distance of the MTR (Sham Shui Po station...or a hike to Olympic station), local restaurants, chain restaurants/malls, parks, Apliu Street Market, Golden Computer Center (cheap electronics), and of course, 711s. Our project entailed us surveying locations on Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Out of all the locations we visited, I felt that Sham Shui Po was the perfect place to take in the diversity of Hong Kong.
