Enjoyable Summer Night starring Shakespeare Jul 10, 2012
If you’re looking for a nice way to combine history and culture in Boston look no further than Shakespeare on the Common. A great way to spend a summer evening at the end of July or beginning of August, Shakespeare on the Common is a free production of Shakespeare’s works by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company. They perform one major work each summer. (2012-Coriolanus; 2011-All’s Well That Ends Well; 2010-Othello).

Shows are Tuesday through Saturday at 8PM and Sunday at 7PM. There are no shows on Monday. Occasionally there will be special events like a 2PM Sunday matinee or an ASL performance, so be sure to check the website for the exact schedule.

The majority of seating is on a first-come-first-served basis, though in 2012 you could reserve a chair for a $30 tax-deductible donation. Chairs must be reserved 48 hrs in advance and are only available for certain performances. If you’re like me and go with a blanket, rest assured that people in the regular lawn chairs sit in their own section so no worries that someone will come along and sit in front of you. (Low beach chairs are allowed in the blanket section.) Get there early as the best spots go fast. My friends and I usually plan to arrive by 6:30 for an 8:00 show.

Boston Common is easily accessible by public transportation (Green or Silver Line: Boylston Street stop; Red Line: Park Street stop) and parking is available in various nearby garages. Some food is usually available, though most people bring their own and enjoy a picnic before the show. Port-a-potties are nearby but lines can be long especially during intermission.
