Shakespeare Cottage Oct 13, 2013
Shakespeare Cottage is the easy going place in the little area of Treasure Beach. Of course most of the places in Jamaica are very relaxed but I prefer this parts for the lack of big resorts, good roads or influx of many foreigners. We traveled with few people that we met in Negril during the new year celebration, and we split the price for the van going this way. Transportation in the parts of Jamaica is scarce and this taxi vans are really expensive if you let them force their price on you.

We heard of really cool cabana place near the beach and that was our main goal, but when we got there, they had only 2 beds and there was five of us. One couple stayed there and three of us went around searching for the any available place to crash. We asked few locals and in the end found this place couple streets away from the crossroads.

Signage that they have is limited to one wooden board and hand written name. There are three buildings on the property with one populated by owners family and other two available for rent. Small wall surrounds the front part of the property with a weird bark three garden. The name “Shakespeare Cottage” does not correspond to anything that you can see on this property, but it is at least fun. After figuring out who is responsible for renting the rooms, we made deal for one room with three beds, overpaid a bit but at least we found place to stay.

Behind the property there is a small lake, more like swampy area/house for the army of frogs. Luckily there was not many mosquitoes when we were there. It looks like there are some agricultural areas in the background. In the background you can see a “castle” on the hill, obviously belonging to the shady business owners. Main rental place is a building on the two floors, featuring sizable terraces in the front of the room doors. Beds were ok, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was shared, but no major issues with that. Only cold water in the shower but all in all it was clean and smelled good. Terraces are in tile floors which is a bit slippery when you wash your feet after coming back from the beach. They also serve some kind of breakfast and they have communal kitchen that you can use to make whatever is needed.

Beach is a few block away and the shortcut involves going over someone’s property and being careful where you step… There are few beaches in the area that are kind of connected and fairly easy to walk on. I had great morning walking all over that area. This area of Jamaica is pretty stable and there are no dangers for visitors.

In general this cottage is an ok place to stay, but I had some strange feeling of the weird vibe between owners and people staying there. Next time I am around I’ll look for another place to stay.

The previous comments were expressed by one of our frequent guests now presently staying with us. We also wish to state that the Last name Shakespeare is common amongst Jamaicans due to our British heritage

Shakespeare Cottage in Treasure Beach is a friendly family owned establishment which I have been visiting for the last 25 years due to the warmth and love displayed by family/owner and staff. The Family does not live in any of the 3 buildings. Unfortunately there was one unusual isolated incident of a visitor having some psychotic breakdown with delusions of grandeur claiming to be owner which has not changed my feeling of this place. All 3 buildings on the premises are available for rent. There is a total of 13 bedrooms, most with private bath room, most with a view of the ocean. Each room is clean and comfortable, some with capacity for 2 and some with capacity for 3. However, the owners are very generous and when visitors who are trying to stretch their money begged them to crammed more than 3 persons in a room at a budget price they extend their kindness and accept this offer. There are 3 kitchens for your own cooking convenience, (breakfast is not served). On the wall to the left and right of the entrance gate the words SHAKESPEARE COTTAGE are boldly written. The scruffy tree in the garden is the precious 'Lignum Vitae', Jamaica's national flower which blooms beautiful yellow flowers in the spring. The body of water out back is a pond which sometimes have miniature Brown ducks and little turtles sailing along. The Castle-like house on the hill belongs to a hard working Treasure Beach native who lives in Europe. I have pleasure of looking out at this this beautiful house every morning I sit on the back Porch of the 3-Bedroom Cottage at Shakespeare's. There is nothing depicting the character of Shakespeare on the premises, but there is a romantic reason why it's given that name. The story of which was told at the 75th anniversary celebration of the Main House. I have found Shakespeare Cottage to be a 'home away from home'.
