Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola (near Santa Cruz, on the California coast more than 1 hour's drive south of San Francisco) is a different sort of restaurant, some words usually associated with the restaurants are: romantic, old-world, charming. You will see how it's different when you walk to the entrance of the restaurant. You are on the top of a hillside garde, with paths leading down to the restaurant by Soquel Creek. You can either walk and admire the garden, waterfalls, flowers, turns and hideaway spots with more views, or you can take a cable car(!) down the hillside. Actually you get a clue of the place by the size of its parking lots. A large bar and lounge area is at the top floor of the restaurant, and then many more dining rooms are at lower levels, until you reach the Greenhouse dining room right by the creek. I suppose the Wine Cellar is probably lower, but I haven't been in that room. Even during the week, the place is hopping with people.
The food is good too. Their New England clam chowder is famous, however, I like them creamier. Our party had Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, 2 Soles, and 2 Salmons. All were tasty except maybe the end cut of the prime rib had a bit more fat that could have been trimmed off.
I had the Pacific rim salmon with ginger-wasabi and ponzu sauces, it was delicious! The Sole my husband ordered was also tasty, but the best was the dessert, the chocolate meltdown with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, I could've eaten 2 all by myself! It's really more like a souffle, not too sweet, but rich and heavenly.
This is a great place to take out-of-town guests for the "wow" factor!
