Great: island, views, recent history. Dec 29, 2010
Free could be misleading as you have to get to the island (Average price) first. This can be done from either Arisaig or Mallaig on the mainland. The island is beautifully shaped with a superb beach on one side. A minibus runs the length of the island. The Sgurr is a hill rather than a mountain with an outcrop on the top.

However, due to its position the views of it from many points on hte mainland and other islands are quite distinctive and the views from it could keep you there a long time.

Eigg's history is pretty grisly - including the massacre of the whole population during the 16th century. To me the recent history is even more interesting - and far, far happier. In 1997 the islanders, aided by a collection, were enabled to buy the island and set up the Eigg Heritage Trust. This may not sound much to not-Scots but to anybody who knows of some of the appalling ownership behavior of sundry lairds, and Eigg suffered more than most, its significance will be apparent.
