Driving the desert in Namibia Mar 08, 2011
After about 6 hours of driving over corrugated desert I suddenly realised there really are only a handful of petrol stations in Namibia! The road to Sesriem was incredible though, and fairly easy to follow, although I wouldn't do it at night. We finally found our camp, a collection of huts with canvas ceilings overlooking an incredible desert backdrop. This was the Namibia we came to see. The next morning we took a balloon ride over the dunes as the sun came up, one of the best things I have ever done, but expensive! We then took a 4x4 into the desert to see the giant sand dunes and they don't dissapoint! Dune 42, is the biggest in the world and takes a good hour to climb up! Furtehr along is the real gem though. Dead Vlei. A haunting collection of fossilised black trees, set against a blue sky and bright orange sand dunes, truly weird and spectacular. Worth the trip alone. 4-5 days travelling around this region is plenty but remember to fill up the car whenever you can!
