Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It has population of 2.000.000 in greater area, and it's the second city by size on Balkan peninsula (after Athnes), but definitely the most dynamic one. Belgrade hosts many annual cultural events, including FEST (Belgrade Film Festival), BITEF (Belgrade Theatre Festival), BELEF (Belgrade Summer Festival), BEMUS (Belgrade Music Festival), Belgrade Book Fair, and the Belgrade Beer Festival , which are visited by many people all over the worl...

Day 1, August 9 - Belgrade, Serbia
posted by:
Aug 09, 2007 - Aug 21, 2007
Not wanting to break with the longstanding tradition of sleeping-in while visiting Belgrade I woke late on Monday morning.  This was my last day in Belgrade and I had a lot to do before catching the night train to Romania.  I had a busy final day in front of me filled with eating, packing, a new tattoo, and last minute errands. Oh yeah that’s right…I did say a new tattoo.  For three of my seven hours of awakedness in Belgrade I laid on a table and let a young woman...

Findings indicate at the first settlements on the municipal area by the Illyrer during the years of 900 B.C. to 300 B.C. first documentary mentions come from the beginning of the 14-th century. The name of the place is presumably derived from the vineyards to be found here (loza is the Serbian word for wine). In 1834 the place received city rights. After there was since 1795 an elementary school in the place, the city received in 1858 her first high school. In 1888 the city disposed of a savi...

Belgrade - The white City

I traveled to Belgrade by train and it took me about 10 hours and had to change two trains but the connections were very good and didn’t have to wait much between them. All the formalities at the border were made on the train and it didn’t take much time, around half an hour. Two beautiful Serbian girls (in a tight uniform) checked my passport and asked me where I was going and how long will I stay, and for a moment I really fancied the idea of getting arrested by them. So I arrived in ...

This part of the blog is probably going to be the least interesting for everyone, but hey its gotta be done, or else the blog isn't complete. Basically the 5th, 6th and 7th were identical days of laying around, reading, sleeping and walking about town a little bit... we're tired from travelling and walking so much. January 5th we came back from Novi Sad by bus and got back to the residence around noon, we had a bite to eat, did some reading, and pretty much updated our blogs/emails/other inte...

Arrival

I had to say goodbye to the hostel and Belgrade and got myself a taxi back to the airport. I bumped into a guy from the festival who I'd met in the airport in London on the way over there so I had someone to chat to while I waited. The first leg of the journey was fairly painless and I got to Dusseldorf in Germany on time. The problem then arose with my connection. There was trouble with the weather and an air traffic back log at Heathrow so my connection was cancelled. They put me on the next...

Kovilj is a village located near Novi Sad. Famous poet Laza Kostic was born in Kovilj. There is monastery. My brother lives there. He is a monk. So, from time to time I go to visit him. Usually, I take bus from Belgrade to Novi Sad, and then I ask driver to stop after we cross bridge in Beska. So, driver stop in the middle of the nowhere and my sister and me take a walk for 30 minutes to monastery. It is much shorter way then going to Novi Sad and then takes a bus to Kovilj. O...

Posle...

Ok, I have been in Kosovo now for almost two months.  I have not had the opportunity to go out as much as I would like, but I have been to the Capital, Pristina, and to Macedonia's capital as well, Skopje.  The area is beautiful, everyday I look out of my office window and there is Mt. Luboten looking back at me.  I just wish I didn't have to work 60 hours a week, or I would be out and about more often. I think I have found my spot.  Skopje is a welcome get away from Camp...

Early flight... Why do I do it??  I need to be at the airport before any public Transport starts running.  And it is raining.  And I am headed for Terminal 5 at Heathrow which has been dogged with problems since it opened a few months back... I love flying :) It actually goes very well.  Check in was a breeze, flight leaves on time and the air steward (James) who is looking after us keeps insisting we drink beer despite it being breakfast time.  I joke that he is t...

Lecture on modern Serbian; tour of Belgrade, Republic of Serbia   Now that we’ve left what I always considered to be Eastern Europe, we are beginning to see the signs of war.  Some of the buildings in Belgrade were bombed by NATO seven years ago and the Serbians have chosen to leave them ruined.  Since the buildings are in the heart of the city and are shown to tourists on city tours, they are left ruined as a message but I’m not sure who the message is for.   Ser...

So, that day finally came and I gone to concert with my sister, curious what that "old boys" have to show. I didn't bring my camera because of security ( more than 60.000 people came on concert that day ) so my mobile done little job to take some videos and photos, just to memorise some moments of that day. And we didn't regret :o) scene was perfect, and "old boys" gave a lesson to many much younger colleagues what is music and performance. So much energy sparkling all around and i just can s...
