A small, tucked away temple overlooking Busan Dec 22, 2013
First of all, DO NOT ATTEMPT to find this temple if you hate hiking. It is incredibly isolated and very difficult to get to. The hike is most of the experience, the temple is just the icing on the cake.

Now that that's out of the way, finally making it to the temple is hugely rewarding. One, because the several hours of hiking to look for it on a terribly-marked hiking trail can make you feel like Columbus (Is this it? Is this India??) Two, the view of Busan from the temple is unmatched by any other location that I have seen in the city. And third, the crown jewels of the temple, the reason to visit, are the rock carvings of the Buddha and other figures.

To get there, you can take the subway to the Oncheonjang Station (go out exit #1) and then follow the signs to Geumgang Park. Follow the signs to the "ropeway" and from there you can take the cable car up. Doing so can shave off a couple hours off of your hike. If you choose to hoof it, hike straight up in the direction of the cable car. At the terminal of the cable car, that's where things get really confusing. Head right on the fork in the trail. You will continue hiking for at least another hour, descending and ascending a couple times. The trail will split of in many directions, many times, but most of them will lead you to the temple, eventually. If you get lost, you can always point in the direction you are going and ask one of the other Korean hikers "Seokbulsa???"

From park entrance to temple, everything is poorly marked. I only found it by the grace of God and a kindly old Korean hiker who helped me find my way. If you have a strong sense of adventure and strong legs, then this is the day trip for you. If not, then there are plenty of other temples to see in Busan! Happy trails!
