Political, academic and religious buildings of the top class Dec 08, 2010
I love grand squares such as Old Town Square in Prague, Trafalgar Square in London or Djemaa el Fna in Marrakech. Senate Square is another such as these. it is only a block away from the Market Square and the sea.

It is the south side of Senate Square that forms the block and it consists of former merchats'homes and the old Town Hall. The east side gives the square its name as the grand building there was the State Senate. It is now the Council of State building.

Opposite on the west is the main University building. These are all great but what makes the square unforgettable is the Lutheran Cathedral on the north side. Built in the mid 19th century in neo-classical style it has a large green dome surrounded by four smaller ones. The interior is simple but it's a mighty striking simplicity.

Last but not least is the statue in the middle of the square to Tsar Alexander II. When the Grand Duchy of Finland was still owned by Russia, he had given greater autonomy.
