I was with a tour, so everything was paid for me, and I don't know much about cost. But see as much as you can. Definitely stop by Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, all the major sites. I would walk through Piccadilly Circus and all the way up to Covent Garden, which is a great, lively place at night. The shops close at night, but restaurants are open for people to mingle long after it gets dark. Don't spend too long at Buckingham Palace. I was there at the changing of the guard, and it was jam-packed with people. St. Paul's Cathedral is a worth a visit, and make sure to get a few pictures of Parliament and Big Ben (right by Westminster and St. James Park, which you can go through to get to Buckingham Palace). But the best thing to do, if you have extra time, it just to take the Tube and see where you end up. It's fun to go with friends and just wander around London completely lost until you're exhausted, but then just ask for directions, and you'll find a nice person to help you back to your hotel. People are friendly there. Also, make sure to walk through Hyde Park. And the gardens nearby (I forget the name) with the Peter Pan statue are beautiful. We found an entrance to Narnia right by it. You should also note that Peter Pan is smoking a reefer. You can find meals in places for pretty cheap. Your main expenses will be hotel and souvenirs, if you get any. A metro ticket for the day shouldn't cost you too much either. And definitely go to see a show while you're there. I would go see Spamalot. I envy anyone who gets to see that.
