How to stay safe. Dec 23, 2009
Ok, I'm writing this due to recent concerns I heard from travellers coming to Mex City. As you may know there's been some violent events in the country related to drug trafficking. Let me tell you that as long as you are not involved in that thing, you are pretty much safe. Don't worry, there are no bullets flying around you while you walk the streets nor the narcs are waiting to kidnapp you. Don't get me wrong, those things may be happening but are isolated events that is easier to win the lottery than be a victim of a violent crime. Any way, don't lower your guard. Keep you jewelry and fancy watch at the hotel. Before going someplace you don't know, ask a local if the place is safe enough. Strolling at night is some areas is a no no. If you are taking photographs on a big SLR keep it in a bag or case while not in use. Have only one credit card with you and some cash. Leave the passport at the hotel, you don't need it. Plan your day ahead and have telephone numbers for taxi services, those are very safe and cost just a little bit more than a taxi you catch on the streets. Even better, locate taxi bases (sitios) around the places you are visiting. And this might sound like a weird advice but do not wear shorts! If you are hot, wear a skirt or light cotton pants. We locals don't wear them here so any one with shorts is evidently a tourist and you might be targeted. Other than that, just enjoy, eat, drink and live it!

Interesting mention about the shorts! Not sure why people don't wear shorts in Mexico, but it is true, people with shorts will always be spotted as a tourist, most likely American lol

I agree fully with memo27. IN addition, I think a local host or buddy is great insurance.
