Submarine and Destroyer Escort. Jun 12, 2011
Seawolf Park is has a little bit of everything. From a play ground, picnicking area, fishing, submarine, and a destroyer escort. The boat I work on was in port down the road from the park on Pelican Island. We grab a couple bicycles and were on are way to the park. We arrived at the park and were great by a friendly employee. The cost to tour the submarine and destroyer was $5 a person, if you plan on fishing or parking a car there is a fee. The USS Cavalla which was a WWII submarine has been taken care of over the years and is still in great shape. Its cool being able to go through the different compartments on the sub, you can even have a sleep over on the sub for different organization. The Cavalla sank a Japanese aircraft carrier on one of its missions. The USS Stewart which was a WWII destroyer escort is one of 3 left in the world. You are not able to go through every compartment on the Stewart. It is starting to show some age on the upper levels of the vessel but still worth checking out. When hurricane Ike hit Galveston it messed up Seawolf Park but the park is back up and running. If you want to tour a WWII Submarine and destroyer escort, this is the place to do it.
