whale watching in the Sea of Cortez Sep 20, 2008
Blue whales, the largest animal ever to have lived on this planet. Typically 90-100 ft long, these gentle leviathans come to the Sea of Cortez to breed in late winter/early spring. For a week I lived aboard a wonderful boat 'Don Jose' with a lovely bunch of fellow whale watchers as we sailed from Loreto down to La Paz. Along the way we stopped at islands with magnificent features, giant cordon cacti, fossils of turtles that were millions of years old, sandstone canyons, prolific birdlife and a chance to swim with the endearing sealions at Los Islotes. But the main attraction were the blue whales and we saw 24 individuals in seven days. Huge but streamlined they could be spotted a mile away by their tall spouts 30ft high when they surfaced. Also seen where fin whales, humpback, pilot and sperm whales and groups of bottlenose and common dolphins sometimes numbering 2000. The sea was alive and bubbling with dolphins feeding.

If wildlife is what you want, along with stunning scenery then Baja is a top destination.
