Scuba diving experience! Apr 04, 2012
So finally I decided to take the plunge and treat myself to a scuba diving experience. I was considering it for a while, so when I arrived to Semporna, I decided-this is it! My friends and I booked a day trip to Mabul island- the girls decided to snorkel, however I bought Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) course and was excited about my new adventure :) I paid RM 300 (+ RM10 jetty fee)and this price included boat, lunch, instructor, gear and 2 dives (c.45 mins each). On the day of the adventure, we all met up in Scuba Junkie shop, where I had to fill out medical information card and was advised about what was going to happen on the island (=more paperwork to fill out, plus a lot of fun!). I was then taken to the gear room, where I tried wet suit and fins and they were taken for me to the island. When we got on the boat, a member of the Scuba Junkie team welcomed everyone and checked our names on the list. Then, during the journey, she approached each of us and talked about the experience. I was greeted by my instructor on the island- that day he was looking after myself and another girl. He also had another 'helper' who he introduced as a 'rock star of diving'- that sounded really encouraging I must say :) Before we were thrown into the sea to be fed to the sharks (just joking-no sharks there!), Rowan, our instructor gave us a little 'lecture' about the gear, safety and showed us skills which we would then practise underwater. After some theory, it was time to do some diving :) Both guys were great- helped us with the gear, with stepping out into the sea and then Rowan told us step by step what was going to happen. And off we went! Underwater world is AMAZING, however before exploring that, we had to practise underwater skills. I wasn't sure at the beginning, how I was going to cope with taking my regulator out of my mouth or with flooding my mask, especially as I'm not a very confident person when it comes to water, but actually it was easier than I thought it would be! Rowan's presence and directions (even underwater!) were really reassuring and encouraging. When I couldn't do one skill properly, we went up, so we could talk it through-he gave me extra tip and I got it first time after that :) And then...I was diving :D Both guys were looking after me underwater (and were taking pictures for me!), so all I did was relax, enjoy and...continue to breathe, lol :) It was an amazing experience! After our first dive, we had lunch in Scuba Junkie Beach Resort on Mabul- freshly cooked pasta, eggs, vegetables, fresh fruit. After lunch- fun dive :) With this package, I could get additional dive for RM50, but actually two seemed to be enough for one day.

Underwater camera wasn't included in the price of DSD, but we rented it out from Scuba Junkie for RM100- not the cheapest, I must say, however I split the cost with the girl I was diving with and I have to say it was best RM50 I spent in Borneo (see it for yourself as I'm attaching some pics!). Scuba Junkie team happily burnt 2 CDs with photos for us, which we then collected the following day in their main shop in Semporna.

So just to summarise: fantastic experience, really helpful and professional staff, felt well looked after and really safe :) After this experiece we then booked another island trip- just snorkling this time- to Sibuan Island (RM110, inlcuding equipment, boat and lunch)and also moved to Scuba Junkie hostel (RM25 dorm). We also sat then a lot in their bar where all divers, instructors and clients just hanged out and had fun together :)

Oh, and Scuba Junkie has just opened their new shop in Kota Kinabalu :)

If you want a great scuba experience, I definitely recommend Scuba Junkie :)
