so many fish! Jul 28, 2011
I went diving with the PRODIVE dive shop out of cairns, on a 4 night live aboard a little over a year ago. it was amazing. I originally learned to dive in California, and we definitely do not have anything like that...our fish are all drab...and instead of beautiful coral, we have kelp and icy water. lol. The whole experience was pretty great. They feed you 3 very full meals a day, let you drink beer after your dives are complete, and the boat is pretty spacious. The only complaints i have (if anyone is going to use this company, is there is a lot of new divers/that are completing open water on the boat orat least there was on my if your a solo traveler. You might not have a dive buddy.)

If you happen to visit Australia you have to make your way up to Cairns, the gateway to the great barrier reef. I took a PADI certification course and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Diving at the Great Barrier Reef was you're on a different planet. I met so many fabulous people from all over the world. If you don't like to scuba, at least go snorkeling for a couple days. I went on a liveaboard boat for 5 days, and it was a great experience!!!

Cairns is not the only place to learn to scuba dive in Australia. Cairns is nice but they get the box jelly fish and irigunji (cant spell for nuts) its a deadly jelly fish thing. Queensland is no doubt the best place to dive in Australia. Cairns is the northern Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef while down south in Bargara which is near Bundaberg, is the Southern Gateway to the G.B.R. There is excellent beach diving as the reef comes close to shore. Soft and hard corals and nice marine life. Also there are the turtles. Swimming is possible at beaches year round unlike Cairns where the best swimming is done in a swimming pool year round. To scuba dive in Cairns you have to go out on a boat but in Bargara a boat's nice but not absolutely necessary. Good if on a budget. There are dive shops with friendly staff and good Instructors. One good place I know is Sea Australia Adventures. Phone number (07) 41547053.
