Giotto excellence Oct 08, 2010
The Scrovegni chapel was initially built by a wealthy banker in 1300 who wanted to add the finishing touches to his house. He employed one of the best sculptors, Pisano, and the famous painter Giotto, to complete the job. Wonderfully restored in 2001, this chapel is a must-see site.

I didn’t see anything from the sculptor, but the work of Giotto is amazing within the chapel. It’s what you expect really; scenes such as the last judgement and Christ with various other biblical figures. The whole thing is topped with this wonderful blue painted ceiling, which is dotted with these gold stars. It’s a shame that photographs aren’t allowed, but it really is beautiful and unforgettable for life.

Entrance price is about 13 Euros for an adult. Booking your tickets is advisable online (http://www.cappelladegliscrovegni.it), though I had no problems with availability when I was there in October without a reserved place. The whole visit is only twenty minutes and you should arrive in good time before your allotted appointment start. You watch a 10 minute video and then get to see the chapel for 10 minutes.

The price and rules are steep, but I felt the art was well worth it. Definitely one to visit if you are a fan of Italian art.
