Schiermonnikoog Vacation Guide

Schiermonnikoog is part of a string of islands witch stretches from Holland's Northern coast over the German coast all the way up to Denmark., the complete island is official nature reserve and that is why a lot of nature lovers like to spend their holidays here bird watching. With only 944 people, this is one of the smallest communities in the Netherlands.Enjoying nature and the white sandy beaches is what its all about here. rent a bicycle and explore the island , no fear for cars on the narrow roads, only residence of the island are allowed here with a car!

You will find only one small village with the same name on Schiermonnikoog.

It is a small historical place with beautiful restored houses from 17th. and 18th. century.
There used to be another village on the islands, but this village disappeared in the waves of a heavy storm and only the church tower still stands there. when the tide is extra low there are still parts of walls and cobblestones visible of this lost place. A symbol that the Dutch not always win there fights with the sea.

There is two ways to get to the island the most convenient way is to take a ferry from Lauwersoog harbour, the other one is walking to it with low tide. It is an unique experience to walk to an island ,see it appear on the horizon, then make it to the beach...However mind you! This can only be done with the help of a professional guide who knows the routes and dangers.

The timing is crucial here and is often apart from the tide table depending on weather conditions.
It is a few years ago that two (Dutch) families with small children thought they didn't need a guide ,where surprised with the fast incoming tide .
One of the parents and all the kids drowned.....
