Scams, Annoyances and Considerations Nov 01, 2013
Before I write anything, I just want "YOU" to understand that, I am not generalizing anything here. I am not a bloody racist and I love Cambodia and Khmer people. These are only my observations :
*Milk Scam : Bedraggled woman with infant in arms tells you she doesn't want money, Just milk for her baby. You buy milk for her at a mini-mart. After you leave she returns the milk and splits money with the mini-mart.
*Blackjack Scam : Friendly stranger tells you he likes your glasses, shirt, bag etc. Casual conversation ensues. Invites you to house to meet family/have cultural experience. Friendly card game begins. Before you know it you owed hundreds or even thousands.
*Kids/Orphanage : Please don't pay casual/short visit to orphanage. It is potentially exploitive, exposes the children to risks. Also, please refrain from giving to child beggars.
*Tuk-Tuk Scam : Usually the tuk tuk drivers are very polite in Cambodia. More or less you will have to negotiate everywhere. In some cases(usually at night / when its raining), one tuk tuk driver will approach you when you get down from the bus, he will offer you the lowest price (lets say $2),and will take u away form other drivers. Once you start moving, he will stop the tuk tuk after 100-200 meters and will say its far , i will charge double ($4). That place is far from the bus stop and usually no tuk tuk near by. So you have no option , but pay them extra.
N.B - If you are taking tuk-tuk for 2 3 people together, make sure the price, the driver is saying is for total , not for per person.
Floating Village Scam : - I am going to write a separate post for this.
