The Scaligeri family was one of the most prominent families in Verona and arguably the most powerful and affluent one in the medieval period. Their family history and power inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the dramatist would invariably have heard of them before writing his play. Therefore, their tombs are incredibly elaborate and this cemetery is surrounded by this beautiful wrought iron gate which is studded with little icons of ladders (the symbol associated with the family). Each monument for the family members buried here is topped off with a statue that depict the deceased person that rests underneath. Although entrance is barred, and you only get to see the tombs from the iron gates, I really think this is a site that is unique to Verona and rather eye-catching too, so would regard this as an essential visit.
