Savolinna is city in the middle of Saimaa lake region in Finland. City has over 26,000 inhabitants. Over third of the city's area is covered by water.
Savonlinna is best known from Olavinlinna (castle) and Opera Festival. To get there is not so easy because the city is surround by water, but train connections there are pretty good. Savonlinna is 335 kilometres away from capital Helsinki. Savonlinna became city in 1639. Between 1743 and 1812 it was held by Russian. At Winter War and Continuation War city was occasionally bombed and cathedral did burn 1940 (and was rebuilt in 1948).

Olavinlinna is an old spooky castle, which kinda makes it perfect for opera. Some more than others, of course; MacBeth, or something by Wagner, but it works for Tosca as well, which I was seeing for about the hundredth time, but I was going with an old friend who’d never gone to any opera in her life.

While walking between the islands in this lovely series of lakes, I see woman in a bear suit run between the trees. Follow her a bit until I see a gaggle of schoolchildren doing some activity (apparently involving their teacher in a bear suit) in the woods.

Nearly the half of the city Savonlinna is coverd with water of the Saimaa lake. The position of the city is really beautiful. The most famous object of interest is the castle Olavinlinna, where every year take place an opera festival.
