Savegre Mountain Hotel San Gerardo de Dota Reviews
Feb 08, 2008
I stayed in this hotel in December 2007, while participating in a photography workshop.
This hotel is located next to Rio Savegre in the remote "quetzal valley" of San Gerardo de Dota, in Central Costa Rica.
This is the ideal place if you want to relax and enjoy hiking around the lodge, in the hotel's own private biological reserve. The Cerro La Muerte in the Talamanca Mountain Range, at nearly 3500m of elevation is not too far away. This valley is a paradise for bird watchers or photographers and apparently also for trout-fishing. An impressive variety of birds can be observed, including the rare "Resplendent Quetzal".
I was staying in a standard room. These are nice and clean, nothing fancy. There was a separate small lounge area. The room was equiped with a safe and more importantly an electric heating system. It can get really cold during the night!
Rates are around US$65 per night. With all meals included it is $110 (single) and $160 (double). They provide very good service and the food is excellent!
In the reception area there is a computer which can be used to get connected to the internet, but naturally this is a slow dial-up connection.
Overall this is a very pleasant hotel that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. The site is awesome and very peaceful.
At the end of our workshop, when everyone was going back to San Jose for their return flights, I decided to stay to enjoy a couple more days at the Savegre Mountain Lodge.
Below are a few photos that I took during this visit (more pics on my Costa Rica blog). I did not take photos of the hotel but you may find some, together with more information on their web site (see address above).
