Savaii island Overview

Of the two main islands that comprise the nation of Samoa, Savai'i is the larger of the two lying North West of Upolu. The capital, Apia is on the smaller island of Upolu. Savai'i is reached from Upolu by a regular ferry service that takes just over an hour, the airstrip in Savai'i is not used for any international flights.

The island is the largest shield volcano in the South Pacific with recent eruptions in the early 1900s. The central region comprises the Central Savai'i Rainforest that with 72,699 hectares (727 km2) forms the largest continuous patch of rainforest in Polynesia. It is dotted with more than 100 volcanic craters and contains most of Samoa's native species of flora and fauna, making it globally significant in world conservation areas.

The island has a circle road that links all of the villages, colourful buses ply the route regularly. Savage has many churches of various denominations and the majority of the islanders attend on Sunday, many retail establishments close that day.
