Sapsucker Woods / Cornell Lab of Ornithology Ithaca Reviews
Are you callng me Yellow Bellied??? Jul 04, 2011
Sapsucker Woods is a wonderful bird sanctuary featuring four miles of trails replete with benches, blinds and scenery galore. The site is also home to the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (the whole deal is Cornell property), which overlooks a pond and bird-feeding garden on the grounds. Inside is supposed to have several attractions, including a nice painting collection, but since I dropped in on the Fourth of July I didn’t get to duck in (only because they opened later, they were still open that day!).
The trails are the prime attraction and traverse a wealth of environments, ranging from woodlands to swamps. I didn’t run into too many other people (at 8AM on the Fourth of July), but took note I was the only one without a pair of binoculars around my neck. Limited my hike to once around the pond, but was astounded by how much beauty I came across in this short jaunt – hitting the other trails must expose one to so much more!
Beyond the visual splendor, the woods were wonderfully noisy. Frogs, birds and bugs all contributed a marvelous diversity of chatter which made things quite lively though I walked alone most of the time. There were plenty of birds, though my camera isn’t powerful enough to bother with a digital attempt at capture (I could have gotten some swell shots of robins lol). A peaceful retreat that comes highly recommended!
