Bundle Up Before You Go! Feb 05, 2014
The Sapporo Snow Festival has been held every February since 1950. They are held at 3 different locations: Odori Park, the red light Susukino district and Tsudome. Because they are promoted in these public areas, the festivals are free to visit. Millions of travelers world wide visit every year as they are massive in scale. So massive, the festivals seemingly encompass the entire city. In any case of lackluster snow during winter, they often import the snow from other parts of Hokkaido as necessary to complete their given projects.

An ample amount of snow is accumulated over the course of the Hokkaido winter and gets put on display on a gargantuan scale. There are icy set pieces the size of houses. The amount of time and dedication in the frigid temperatures is very impressive. Each set piece is admirable as television crew is able to climb upon some and make their news reports. They are spectacular to see at night as some of the artists place lighting effects. There are also nighttime music performances in the cold, and ski performances on makeshift ramps.

There are vendors who brave the extreme weather on the side walks, offering many souvenirs, warm food and beverages for the pedestrian passing by. Travelers should exercise the necessary precautions in the wintry north Japan. It can be severely cold! Bundle up before you go. The batteries for your smartphone or your digital camera may drain faster as well. Travelers may need to intermittently find occasional refuge in a warm establishment from time to time. Most convenient stores have a winter garment section with scarves, head warmers, thick gloves and long underwear available for the underprepared traveler.

The Sapporo Snow Festival is a staple of Hokkaido culture worth visiting. If you live in Japan, you should go. If you're visiting in the winter, you should definitively head that way in February. A solid recommendation worth remembering!
