Sào Joào del Rei is quite picturesque when you get down to street level, it has the usual smattering of churches and a mini Christ the Redeemer ("Senhor dos Montes") overlooking the town. However, Lonely Planet´s and Footprint´s South America books don´t give much detail about the place. So, if you want to have any chance of getting anything out of a visit, you either
(1) need to speak Portuguese (to be able to follow any guided tours), or
need to speak to the people at the Tourist Information office in the Rodoviaria (main bus station), or
(2) speak to one of the English-speaking staff at the "Complexo Ferroviàrio" (the old train station in the centre of town, near the canal) and get a map of the town.
