I highly recommend paying for a cab ride to go up the mountain to the butterflies. My husband and I thought that $30 was too expensive, and since we are used to walking everywhere we go in Mexico, we thought we'd hike up. My poor parents were forced to go with our will, since we were essentially their tour guides. It would have taken us FOREVER to get to the entrance if an incredibly kind Mexican family had not taken pity on us, shoved their kids in the back, and hauled all 4 of us (laying on each other in the back seat) up the mountain. Especially since once you get up there, you still have quite a hike (3-4 km and steep) from the entrance to the top. The road was very bumpy and would have been a disaster to walk up! So even though our Lonely Planet guide made it sound doable, it was not - thank goodness for the kindness of strangers! (they drove us back down again, too). The sanctuary is amazing and worth all the effort!
