Santo Domingo Sight-Seeing Jan 03, 2011
I recently had an opportunity to visit Santo Domingo on a business trip. Having been to a few other Caribbean Islands, I felt that the DR compared very well. Not only is it safer than other islands, but also the history in the city of Santo Domingo is amazing. A week's vacation could easily be consumed with the historic sites and great restaurants and cafes of Santo Domingo followed by 4 or 5 days at a local beach resort such as Punta Cana. The history of the place is some of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere as Christopher Columbus chose the DR as his home and is actually buried there. As you walk around the narrow cobble-stoned streets of Santo Domingo, you will see fortresses, which look more in place in medieval Europe than in the Caribbean Sea and buildings from the 1500s that makes the Northeastern U.S. colonial history look infant in comparison.

If you like history, Larimar, Amber, and Mamajuana, Head to Santo Domingo! Jan 20, 2008
It's funny, as I make this list, I think "Wow, maybe I should move that port up on the list." And honestly, the last 3 are right up there together for me.

I was instantly enchanted with Santo Domingo. Everyone was very patient with my limited Spanish. I found the city to be full of culture and history. This was a departure port for us, but we did take a history tour after we got off the ship and before our plane left. (Full write up is in my Legend of the Seas travel blog). For only $10 USD I bought this beautiful little pendant that’s reversible Larimer and amber, set in silver. I'm not a big "port shopper" but I loved that most things were very native to the island. Try Mamajuana while you're there, by the way, it's good and will clear up a minor sore throat.

I would strongly recommend seeing Columbus lighthouse, Christopher Columbus' final resting place. We saw this before boarding the ship. I wish we had more time. Not having a great deal of time just makes me want to go back. The lighthouse is just feet away from the cruise ship port. I would take another cruise out of Santo Domingo ANY time. But next time, I'll go down a few days before. While the Quality Hotel near the airport was very clean with an EXCELLENT restaurant and bar, I would like to stay in town next time. That or hop one of the local busses the drove by the hotel into downtown. Or I'll just call Segundo, world's most tolerant taxi driver!
