If you are in Santiago, Chile or Mendoza, Argentina and wish to travel to the other
location, you might consider going by bus.  The trip is over the Andes is spectacular and takes about 6 hours.  Cost is around $15 U.S. one-way (that was what it was in 2005...they accept VISA)

There is service to Buenos Aires bypassing Mendoza, but adds another 10 hours travel time

When you get to Customs and Immigration, the bus has entered a large building.  Altitude is around 12,000 ft msl and it gets cold up there...especially in the winter (generally June, July, August and into September).  While you are waiting, go outside and you might see a condor gliding around. I have made this trip about 4 times and will do it again.
