Visiting the "Mouth of Truth" Jan 09, 2013
Santa Maria in Cosmedin is the church you need to look for when visiting the minor tourist attraction "Mouth of Truth" or Bocca della Verita, more of an urban legend than actual history.

This ancient Roman fountain is a tourist draw since the legend goes that it is a "lie detector". When you're in love you're supposed to visit this marble face of a pagan god and stick your hand inside. If you're intentions are true you'll be spared, but if you lie your fingers/hand will get bitten off.

We visited this in combination with the synagogue and the Jewish ghetto which is close by. The church is also very close to Tiber Island. If you're in the area be sure to stop by even if it's only for the been-there-done-that picture.

nice church May 26, 2012
Santa Maria in Cosmedin is home to "La Bocca della Verita", located in the portico. The Mouth of Truth is an image of a man-like face, carved from Pavonazetto marble. The sculpture is thought to be one of several possible pagan gods, probably Oceanus. Most Romans, however, believe that the Bocca represents the ancient god of the River Tiber. Mouth is most famous as a lie detector. Starting from the Middle Ages it was believed that if one told a lie with one's hand in the mouth of the sculpture it would be bitten off..

you will enjoy in this church it l especial and i advise you after taking photo with mouth
