Small, beautiful Gothic church - indeed one of the few medieval churches in Pisa where the Gothic appearance was preserved.

The church was built around 1230 and enlarged in 1325. Eight years later, a thorn from Jesus' thorn crown was placed in the church which gave the church its name - della Spina means "of the thorn". In 1872, when the flow of the Arno river was re-regulated, the church was moved stone by stone to today's street level. However, this was not done completely without alterations to the medieval design which didn't please the locals too much back then.

Today, the church is usually not open for visitors and not used for religious services any more. However, at the time of my visit, there was an art installation in the church so that it was open during daytime hours. Maybe it will be put back in use as an arts venue?
