Romanesque wonder May 11, 2011
If you are in Arezzo and only have time to visit one church, make it this one. The Romanesque building has a wonderful bell tower and dates from the twelfth century and various renovations have been made, including some by the famous Vasari in the sixteenth century. I thought the medieval frescoes were quite a treat to see, and the wooden roof of the church was quite a feature. Though the rest of the walls are fairly plain, and the church really isn’t studded with pretty chapels, it is still a very worthy visit. Apart from its historic and artistic worth, the church still seems to attract a decent amount of worshippers - the area underneath the main altar is reserved for services and closed off to tourists. Worth visiting and at the time of visiting (May 2010), it was under further restoration so hopefully it’ll look even better for the future!
