Santa Cruz Monastery Coimbra Reviews
Iconic monastery Nov 29, 2010
The monastery was founded in the twelfth century and is the final resting place of the first two kings of Portugal.
The facade is beautiful from the outside, with a few statues upon its walls and overlooking a nice open square. Inside, the walls are covered in very beautiful tilework, and this even frames the pulpit very nicely. The ceiling is studded with wonderful detail, and the organ is elaborate. I didn't even notice the organ at first glance as there is so much that competes for your attention. It was nice to see a steady amount of worshippers visiting the monastery too.
If you are visiting Coimbra, and have the briefest amount of time, make sure you leave time for this monastery. Iconic, historically significant and inspiring, the monastery is well worth visiting.
