This s a nice little museum here in Santa Barbara. It often brings in outside exhibits that are quite nice. Its house collection has Ancient Asian art, some Greek and Roman art. They have some modern works, but they generally are not major works. I usually go there for the outside exhibits. During the summer, they have a monthly open house where it is cocktails and art. These are very fun nights to go to and are reasonable in price. All in all, a nice little museum.

Beatuful Museum turned into Hip Night Life Jun 17, 2008
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has put a hip spin on culture. Already known for its breathtaking exhibits the SBMA "Nights" event held throughout the summer turns art into a party and a once and a lifetime experience.

If you love art, live dj's, performances, martinis and are willing to shell out the extra cash for some VIP tickets.

Don't Go:

If you are looking for a quiet evening, are not a fan of the club scene, not big on the whole art thing, or looking for a family event.

I like going to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, especially on Sundays when it is free. Many of their temporary exhibits are quite impressive such as "Between Past and Future: New Photography and Video from China", one part of the exhibition was set at the Contemporary Arts Forum. I thought it was a good idea to have two art museums/galleries work together. Some other past exhibitions were "Renaissance to Rococo: Masterpieces from the Collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art", which I really enjoyed. I also like that there are usually small photography exhibitions on, either from the museum's own collection or other sources.

There is a fountain surrounded by plants in the entrance of the museum. It puts the visitors in the mood to discover the room right behind it, which shows antiquities, which range from an Egyptian limestone relief to Roman sculptures. I enjoy the Asian art (which are exhibited upstairs) and antiquities, more than the paintings of the permanent collection.

If you go on a Sunday, you might want to go later on in the day because it seems to be less busy then.

Now there is an Ansel Adams (until June 24 07) as well as a Rufino Tamayo (until Memorial Day 07) exhibit.

This museum was pretty cool. I really enjoyed most of the paintings and photography shown. Plus they also have permanent pieces as well as traveling exibits, which makes the museum more interesting. I would suggest going on Sunday (its free)!
