Sansibar

Sansibar is billed as one of the trendiest places to be seen in Frankfurt. Apparently it's split over two locations - one roof terrace on top of a skyscraper and another ground floor location at the bottom of the Japan tower. It was the latter that we went to and I can only hope that all their other customers were at the roof terrace cos there was no sign of them here.

The place itself comes in highly stylised take on a Japanese theme (presumably in tune with the building.) The walls are all floor to ceiling windows, one of which can be opened to access an outdoor terrace which seamlessly blends in with the interior. The furnishings and décor are all extremely tasteful and feel reassuringly opulent – you can't help but feel that someone had spent a lot of money on this place.

So now we get to the big problem. This place is supposed to be exclusive – it obviously is because at a reasonable hour on a Friday evening we were literally the only customers in there. There's nothing worse than an empty bar or restaurant.

There were considerably more staff than customers but despite not really having much to do they weren't particularly falling over themselves to serve us. It was as though we were some kind of inconvenience to them by actually wanting to buy drinks. And of course a pretentious attitude prompts expensive prices which only magnified how crap it all felt.

We passed by again later in the evening and there were a few people in but it was by no means busy. If that's typical then it won't be exclusive for much longer - it'll be closed!
