Sandton Vacation Guide
One of wealthier suburban areas of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandton has, in recent years, risen up as the new financial hub of Jo'burg. This is due to the demise of the inner city CBD. It is now packed with investment banks, financial consultants and even the JSE Securities Exchange.
Sandton, however, is best known for its shopping mall - Sandton City. One of the largest malls in Africa it is filled with brand label stores, restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, a cinema and so on. A very cosmopolitan place to visit and great for spending a day shopping. Surrounding the entire complex are various luxury hotels all of 5-star quality which cater to the wealthy businessmen and woman who come to do business in Jo'burg.
Nelson Mandela Square (previously Sandton Square) has a giant bronze statue of the former president who helped lead the country out of the atrocity that was apartheid. A perfect place to nab a bite and for the kids to play in the fountain after shopping in the mall.
Sandton has been criticised for being materialistic and being an area for rich white people to turn a blind eye to the poverty-stricken area of Alexandra which lies not far from Sandton. Seen by many as a prime example of snobbery but no one can deny that there is money to made from the developments and deals going on in this area of Jo'burg.
A new project called The Gautrain is underway at the moment. It is a new railway system that many hope will decrease traffic congestion within the city. Be warned that Sandton's roads are some of the worst to drive in during peak hour traffic and with the construction of the railway going on you should avoid driving around this area while people make their way to or from work.
