Sandalwood Hotel Mawlamein
Sandalwood Hotel Mawlamein Mawlamyine Reviews
Good and clean hotel Feb 11, 2013
The hotel located within walking distance to the market and bus station with big signboard outside. The receptionist is friendly but didn’t speak much English, it is a wee bit difficult to communicate or asking direction from her and the hotel doesn’t have a city map either. However we managed to ask the receptionist to book another hotel at different city for us.
We didn’t book this hotel online as we though it is very small city and we would probably be able to find a good hotel without online booking, unfortunately it wasn’t the case and it appears the city is really busy with local and foreigner tourist and most hotel were fully booked. So, we just turn up at this hotel and ask if they have room available. Luckily they have one last room at higher price as the room is for three people.
After we checked the room which is located on third floor and the hotel doesn’t have an elevator, we agreed with the price which cost usd 30 per night for two people with breakfast.
The room itself is very nice, clean, bright light, big windows, spacious with one double bed and one single bed, and one night stand in between the beds, medium size cupboard, small working television, table and chair, and big hanger to hang towels and clothing’s, fan and good working air condition. The bathroom is quite outdated but hot water working really well, and soap and shampoo provided.
On first impression, the room is very good but after stay inside for awhile, it has distinct smell of tobacco. We couldn’t move to another room as it is the last room, and finally the receptionist gives us air freshener to spray in the room. Actually that freshener smells makes us a wee bit sick as the bellboy spray it a bit too much. So we just turn on both air condition and fan to get the air moving and make the room less smelly.
During our stay, the hotel is very quite even though it is fully booked and we didn’t encounter many people around in the lobby or hallway during day or night time and the hotel insulation is pretty good as we didn’t hear people talking next door either. However, it is very busy during breakfast time and we see many of the hotel guests.
The breakfast room is handy as it is next to our room, and breakfast serve from 7 am to 10 am every day. Breakfast consist of 4 pieces of toast, 2 eggs (either fried or omelets), bananas, orange juice, tea or coffee. Actually we only get bananas on our first breakfast, as we didn’t get any for the next two days during our stay.
There is many staff working in the kitchen but the service still slow, and it appears many local stay in this hotel than foreigner and the local has different breakfast than us. Mostly local gets fried rice with egg for breakfast.
Overall, we enjoy our stay in this hotel as it is nice small city with beautiful pagoda and the receptionist seems recognize us as every time we were back to the hotel from sightseeing, the receptionist gives the room key before we ask.
