I was with my good friend in this area in 2007, before the severe earthquake. Going from lima to ica is very easy through the terminal autobus. buses are very luxuary for cheap prices. once in ica the easiest way to sandboard is to take a cab to huacachina, this is a small oase town, very laid back with backpack hostels, off cours in the dunes. here you can rent anywhere the boards. we walked uphill the dunes, but that is not nice. Take a dune buggy to bring you up. also the big buggy rides in the back country of the dunes are worth doing. for night activity you can go to pisco breweries to see the culture and sometimes there is a small party. you can arrange this with a youth hostel. we took a cab to the brewerie ourselfs and stayed very late at the party and on the way back got robbed. Dont worry, we were a little bit "nonchalant" but watch out anyway.

It was only three days before we went here that we head about this places, but we’re so glad we did. Huacachina is a 5 minutes moto taxi drive away from Ica. This place is so cool, it’s in the desert of Peru, and it’s basically a man maid oasis. There’s a little bit of shops, hotels and hostels, and then just mountains and mountains of sand dunes.

This is the place to go if you want to go sand boarding, sand buggying or on desert expeditions. We only stayed here for one night, as we were too cheap to actually to anything that costs more then 10 soles in the desert, but it was totally cool for the night. I wouldn’t recommend staying for longer unless you were going sand buggying.

The sand boarding is really hard, especially if you're used to snow beneath your board. Plus walking up the dunes is KILLER. If you're really into this, I suggest you book a tour and don't just rent the board like my boyfriend and I did.

Sand boarding in the Ica desert is by far the coolest thing we have done since coming on our trip, it is up there with doing Machu Picchu, and its so worth doing if your passing thru Ica. We booked our trip with our hostal, i think most other hostels offer some sort of trip into the sand dunes for boarding, our trip cost us each 32soles, which worked out just over a fiver each. For that we got board rental, dune buggy ride (which on its own was just fun!!) Lessons, and two hours on the dunes. It was absolulty fun, and so cheap to do.

If you have ever done Snow boarding then you can prob go down on both legs, but we went down on our bellys, and we found this more safer, and more fun, it goes very fast, and is a great rush!!

Sand boarding is a great day of fun, once you learn how to do it, you can then rent a board of your own and go boarding. we had so much fun it was a great experience. excellent value.
