San Simeon is perhaps best known as the home of the famous Hearst Estate built by media mogul William R. Hearst. The Hearst Castle has been deeded to the California National Parks. Tours of this decadent estate can be taken throughout the year except on major holidays. Sam Simeon can be found along the historic Highway 1. Also in this town one can find a special cordoned off shore where elephant seals can be seen on land giving birth and resting.

Hearst Castle on the Turkey Day
posted by:
Sep 14, 2005 - Nov 22, 2007
Hearst Castle is about 45 minutes away from where I live, but I had never been there. It somehow sounded like a very touristy place, and going there wasn't high in my priority list. Then, a close friend of mine who happens to be working at the castle invited me to visit there on the Thanksgiving Day. "No, they won't serve you turkey dinner at the castle..," he says, "but you can chill out by the swimming pool."  Hmmm. I had no particular plan for the day since I was not going to ...

Figured out how to traverse the 1 without throwing up! The secret I figured out is to 1) not eat breakfast and 2) put your feet down on the floor of the car and clench your abs in the direction that you are swerving! So managed to make it to San Simeon with minimal discomfort! What a day to visit this place.. it was drizzly, cloudy and dark. And we were not allowed to use flashes inside or outside. Hopefully you can see a bit of the gradeur of this place. Hearst seems to be a really interestin...

Hearst Castle
posted by:

The next day we drove along the coast with the beach and ocean nearby.  We enjoyed the trip all the way south to the Heart Castle. The weather wasn’t a whole lot better when we got there.  But at least it wasn’t raining. As you can see the pictures, it was still very low clouds and overcast. The worst part was that we were not able to get to take the tours or the castle. I have had back problems for some time and it keeps me from doing lots of steps. Each and every tour req...
