San Pedro Sula is the primary economical center and exporting city for Honduras. The small square includes the the Cathedral, municipal center and a small park. It is surrounded by a number of restaurants, but they are primarily western restaurants other than the small Pamplona cafe. The breadth of American restaurants can also be seen throughout the rest of city.
It is generally considered one of the more dangerous cities in the country with a high rate of gang violence and high percentage of AIDS infections. Walking more than a few blocks after dark is considered very dangerous and a taxi ride anywhere in town is normally lempira per person. To the north of the city near the Hilton and Intercontinental Hotel is a nice assortment of bars in the Zona Vida that should be discovered, but are a bit calm by most Latin American standards.

I took a run this morning after some consultation with the front desk of our hotel about where I could and could not go. The streets I can go on is limited to four in this city of 500,000 people. When I asked about a few other streets he was very clear about saying 'No'. There was no hestitation so I will stick to his advice. The heat even at 8am will make running difficult here though. The highs are in the mid to upper nineties every day...

By the end of the week neither our wallets nor our red skin could afford any more time in Belize, so we left the country for Honduras. We learned our lesson (see previous entry) about bus travel and opted for a boat ride. Little did we know what a brilliant decision this would turn out to be! I was thinking strictly in terms of transportation, but it ended up being quite a little adventure! The first hour was rather uneventful, but soon we were side by side with a Sper...

On the way we had met a guy on the bus who was a business man and spoke good english - got a lot of good info from him.- actually he reconfirmed the information not to go out after dark - sounds scary but its seems one of the initiation ceremonies for the gangs is to shoot some one - hence the infiormation not to go out - so this is not just some kind of story to scare the tourists!
Next morning we were leaving early so had no time to look around as we had a plane to catch to Roatan. On the ...

My friends and I all slept at one of our host families homes so that we could all head over together to the Tica Bus station at our bright and early departure time of 4:30AM. We gathered our overflowing backpacks (remember the old school backpacks from junior high and high school.. that was our one item!), our passports, and headed out the door in a flash. Some of our Honduran friends surprised us by meeting us at the station for a send off!
