San Miguel Overview

San Miguel is a small town of about 1200 (a slight increase since 2000) located at the intersection of New Mexico Highways 28 and 192 in Dona Ana County in Southern New Mexico. San Miguel is southeast of Mesilla/Las Cruces and due west of Mesquite. The town in 90% Hispanic and largely agricultural. However, unlike the colonia of Rodey, San Miguel has some actual infrastructure and qualifies as a town. San Miguel was settled in the early 1800s and had a beautiful stone church called Saint Michael’s (or San Miguel) which was completed in 1827. The church was partially destroyed by a fire and was rebuilt in 1984. The renovated church still stands along New Mexico Highway 28 and is quite pretty. In San Miguel there is also the Riverside Dance Hall which has long been a popular spot for cowboys and farm workers. San Miguel is a relatively poor town but I liked it.
