San Martino Winery & Vineyards Rockwall Reviews
Relaxing Winery outside of Dallas Apr 20, 2011
I know what you might be thinking ‘”Texas wine?!” It’s not as crazy as it sounds – Texas is 5th in the US in grape and wine production with a couple hundred wineries throughout the state. One of them is the relaxing San Martino Winery & Vineyards. San Martino is a wonderful place to escape from the surrounding busy-ness that can be Dallas. Located east of Dallas in Rockwall, it’s a small family-owned winery specializing in handcrafted wines (primarily red).
You can purchase a glass or bottle to enjoy either in the tasting room or in one of their many outdoor seating areas. (And don’t forget to buy a bottle or two to take with you!) They also offer a selection of wines for tasting - $8 for a selection of up to 5 wines. Regular tastings do not require a reservation and are offered during regular business hours. Please note that selection may be more limited than usual on Sunday. As the winery does not regularly offer food for purchase, visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic basket (food only).
If you’re going to be visiting in a group of 8 or more, please call ahead. Private tastings with the winemaker and a tour of the facilities which includes education on the winemaking process, viewing of the press pad, tank room and barrel area are offered for groups of 10 or more for a price of $20/person. These private tastings take approximately 1.5 hours and require advanced reservations. Coming with the family? The owner requests that no minors be in attendance after 5PM or at special events. As for those events…
San Martino hosts events such as live music, multi-course dinners/lunches, Friday Nights at the Grill, etc. Be sure to check out the “Events” page before you go.
Other things to note – While it is definitely outside of the city, San Martino is not hard to find as most of the drive is from one marked highway to another. And it really is surrounded by vineyards and open land. You might encounter mosquitoes, a bunny or two, or even an armadillo in the distance so toss a bottle of bug repellant and maybe some sunscreen in the car. Speaking of cars, free on-site parking is available.
And last but not least - don’t be surprised if one of the friendly regulars or devoted wine club members offers a hearty “hello.” During my last visit, the owner himself thanked me for coming.
