An hour by bus from Madrid, El Escorial is a small, pleasant town best known for a pair of monuments to two of Spain's most poweful heads of state. King Philip II built his palace/monastery complex of San Lorenzo de El Escorial here in the 16th century, and it remains a special place to the royal family to this day.
Many visitors to El Escorial also visit the more recent, and more controversial, Valley of the Fallen (Valle de los Caidos) outside town. This massive structure contains the tomb of 20th-century dictator Francisco Franco, and is also a memorial to those who fought for him during the Spanish Civil War.

A fellow grad student who I met in Barcelona emailed me one day with some news. She was doing research in the monastic library at El Escorial and had happened upon a 14th-century manuscript containing copies of royal letters pertinent to my dissertation topic. Since I was heading up to Madrid for the conference, I decided to take an extra day to go to El Escorial and have a look.

40,000, whose names are accounted for in the monument's register.
Although the valley contains Nationalist and Republican
graves – several former Republicans' bodies were moved there from
temporary graves at the end of the war – the tone of the monument is
