San Juan de la Maguana Vacation Guide
I stayed in San Juan for over 10 days, but I'm a single man so that was perfect. If you don't want to spend your time at a resort your whole vacation or you want to travel the country side west of Santo Domingo. I would advise to make San Juan your home base and venture out each day sight seeing to Azua and Barahona beaches. In my opinion San Juan is the cleaner and better living of all the cities thats not a tourist attraction. There is no English, but the people there are friendly and welcomes you into their city.
The locals feel that its boring there, but I'm from Saint Louis and I had a nice time. The people are lively and the night life for the size of the city was good. It's a population of about 242. I was out at a restaurant's bar or disco each night. In the day time I headed toward the mountains or to the beach, about an hour drive to either one.
The good thing about San Juan De la Maguana its away from resorts and Santo Domingo so you spend less money. You don't have to worry about people trying to hustle money out you once they see you're a foreigner. If you trying to budget your money it can be done in San Juan. A $100 debit from a main bank ATM gives you 3400 pesos. I made purchases and 3400 pesos is like having $260 bucks. Thats how I felt after going over the things I bought.
The bad of San Juan - Don't drink the water, power outages each day. You need a car. Don't expect hamburgers, pancakes, hash browns at restaurants. fish is the best meal.
