Cayo, as San Ignacio is referred to by the locals, is a great little town. If you've come to the country by way of Belize City, this place is completely different. A pictureqsue location, laid-back atmosphere, and very friendly people.

Cayo is a great place to spend a few days, as it makes a wonderful base to visit incredible sites in Belize such as Xunantunich and Caracol, and even has a Mayan site in its borders, Cahal Pech. On top of that, there's the advantage of being so close to the Guatemalan border, that a day trip to one of the most impressive Mayan sites in the world, Tikal, is a must.

Burns Avenue, the main street in town, is lined with quaint guesthouses, lively bars, good restaurants, and tour companies which can arrange tours to any attraction in the area.

Expensive? Now then, Belize.  Many of those I met on the road were not going to Belize because it is viewed as expensive. Well, that depends on where you go.  I understand that the world class destinations Belize has to offer are quite expensive - some of the Cayes on and around the Barrier Reef are such places, but San Ignacio isn't and there are some great things to do around there.  Indeed, I wish I had more time there. San Ignacio itself isn't spectacular and I spent my ...

Xunantunich

The journey to Xunantunich took us across the whole of Belize, almost to the border with Guatemala. After passing through the town of San Ignacio, we continued on the Western Highway to a point where we had to cross the Mopan River. The ferry, which reminded me of White's Ferry on the Potomac, cannot accommodate a tour bus. We had to disembark and the cross the river on the ferry on foot. Several minivans were waiting on the other side to take us the last few miles to the Xunantunich sit...

San Ignacio, in Belize's western Cayo District, is a the place to stay for your land-based activities.  The town, referred to by locals only as Cayo, is built along the shore of the Macal River.  Directly across the Macal, on the opposite shore, is the town of Santa Elena.  There are many nice guest houses, motels, and hostels located throughout town, as well as restaurants, internet cafes, souvenire shops, and tour guide offices.  It is from Cayo that one can explore seve...
