Expensive?
Now then, Belize. Many of those I met on the road were not going to Belize because it is viewed as expensive. Well, that depends on where you go. I understand that the world class destinations Belize has to offer are quite expensive - some of the Cayes on and around the Barrier Reef are such places, but San Ignacio isn't and there are some great things to do around there. Indeed, I wish I had more time there.
San Ignacio itself isn't spectacular and I spent my ...

The journey to Xunantunich took us across the whole of Belize, almost to the border with Guatemala. After passing through the town of San Ignacio, we continued on the Western Highway to a point where we had to cross the Mopan River. The ferry, which reminded me of White's Ferry on the Potomac, cannot accommodate a tour bus. We had to disembark and the cross the river on the ferry on foot. Several minivans were waiting on the other side to take us the last few miles to the Xunantunich sit...

San Ignacio, in Belize's western Cayo District, is a the place to stay for your land-based activities. The town, referred to by locals only as Cayo, is built along the shore of the Macal River. Directly across the Macal, on the opposite shore, is the town of Santa Elena. There are many nice guest houses, motels, and hostels located throughout town, as well as restaurants, internet cafes, souvenire shops, and tour guide offices. It is from Cayo that one can explore seve...

Driving to Belmopan, Belize from Milwaukee, Wisconsin was life-altering to say the least! (Yes, I loved every minute of it! :) ) Once in Belize, I spent some time getting to know the people and exploring as much of the country as I could. Hopefully, some of these pics will give you guys a feel of how wonderful Belize truly is.

Dragged myself out of bed and to the supermarket to get some snacks for the long day. Turned up to the tour operator at 8:30am only to be told that the heavy rainfall overnight and all morning meant we couldn't do the trip as we had to do 3 river crossings just to get to the cave and the water would have been over our heads! They presented another option to us but no one was really keen - I was semi keen but knew I really should just stay in bed for the day so that's what I did, all day. I sl...

After crossing the bridge from Santa Elena to San Ignacio, we continued on to the small town of San Jose Succotz to take the ferry across the river to the ruins of the Mayan city of Xunantunich. What an experience! When we got out of the car it was like walking into a furnace - it had to be like 110F or something! We waited for the man to hand-crank the ferry across the river to us and then Dion drove the car onto it. He got out and gave the guy a break and cranke...

I was so happy with the first Cayo trip, I convinced Atousa to stay another day so I could go on another day trip. With my limited options, the most interesting one going out that day was Coracol, a Mayan site, combined with 2 other stops -- Rio Frio Cave and the Rio On Pools, a series of swimming holes, cascades and rapids. The trip was definitely expensive ($60), but I'm definitely glad I went. I did look into going independantly to these places, but cab rides out that far would have cost e...

We have been in San Ignacio since the 11th. Today we went to the Caves Branch Preserve and did some tubing down the river, through a couple of caves. The caves were a lot longer than I thought. It was pretty awesome, though a bit cold by the end. I was waiting for some warm sunshine when we came out at the mouth of the last cave, but it started pouring almost immediately after we floated out. We had a little ways to float down the open river before we were b...

The last few days have been in Belize. Its got a very strong Jamaican influence particularly in Caye Caulker where we stayed first. Its one of the bigger islands and boasts one of the longest reefs second to Australia. It didn't seem as established though, being only 23 years old, or at least the bit we went to. The pace of life is practically stationary! You can't get annoyed, thats just how it is but it doesn't take long to chill out and join them. Some of us took a day trip to the reef and...
