San Felipe Vacation Guide

San Felipe has all the charm of an isolated Mexican fishing village on the edge of the desert. The mountains are spectacular the dirt is plentiful and the Sea of Cortez runs away from town at sunset.

San Felipe has one of the most extreme high and low tides in the world. The beach literally rolls sometime after sun up and then rolls away - maybe 500 yards - as the sun sets. This phenomena is helpful when its time to tell the kids its time to leave, "look, even the ocean is going home."

The temperature is unforgiving so don't go in the summer.

Do rent a 4x4 - this place has lots of sand and unpaved roads and is well known for its off road racing.

Do take a trip south of the city to its isolated and more appealing beaches.

Also, do go south to see the world’s largest cactus. It's a cactus forest of stark and unquestionable beauty.

Don't expect great deals... San Felipe has been overtaken by U.S. expatriates and the prices are reflected in the population shift.

Although the drive from Mexicali is long, it is also very nice if you like dry lake beds and vast desert landscape interspersed with some of Baja California’s tallest mountains.
