San Diego Historic Center (Balboa Park) Reviews
When using a day-pass, it's a good use of an hour Jul 04, 2011
We bought a $35 5-museum pass and stopped here as one of our stops through Balboa Park.
San Diego History Center is located in the heart of Balboa Park. Here you will not only find a collection of intriguing exhibitions that chronicle San Diego’s diverse history, but it also has a Library (but we didn't get a chance to visit). This is home to over 45 million pieces of paper and 2.5 million images that document the people, places and events of San Diego’s past.
In addition to the exhibitions at San Diego History Center, the museum boasts that it also presents a number of public programs including lectures, workshops and educational programs. During the time of our visit, they had an exhibition of photographer Norman Baynard. The photographs were fantastic and there were prints and videos on how he impacted the Logan Heights neighborhood. The first exhibit was on selected styles from Marston's Department Store, 1878-1961, but I had never heard of the store and imagine this store would have a place in the heart of Calofornians. There was another exhibit that took up a tiny space in the corner of a museum and was entitled A DIFFERENT LIFE: Finding our Future in San Diego. It is co-curated by a group of teenage refugees from Somalia through the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) Students Plus after-school program. It presents their struggles, hopes, dreams and how they have adapted to life in San Diego. It was very small, but nice to see their work in a museum.
