64 Rome burns down under Nero’s rule
Fact about Nero: “Nero was the last emperor who was related to the Julio-Claudian dynasty which had ruled Rome since Julius Cesar rose to power in Rome. He was famous for his excesses. He had the greatest villa ever build in the central part of Rome at that time - but after his death the villa was buried underground and when it was rediscovered the paintings was the inspiration for the grotesque art of the renaissance.”
The church of San Clemente is located just a short walk away from the Colosseum. It is one of the oldest churches in all of Rome. I only went in and had a quick look around the inside of the church which was ok. But the church isn’t the most impressive of the churches in Rome - but it is the only place where you can go down in the different layers of the history of Rome.
If you go down you’ll decent down through the different layers of the city and see what life was like in the city in the ancient days.
