Day Trip to San Clemente, California Sep 20, 2011
I was recently at Camp Pendleton for some training and spent all of my down time in San Clemente. A beautiful Pacific seaside town, there is an interesting balance of the laid back surfer lifestyle with the high-paced Marine base right up the road. I like to compare San Clemente to Sarasota for those who are familiar with the Gulf Coast of Florida. There are several streets featuring nothing but boutique style shops, boutique style hotels and surf shops. This is not the town to find a Marriott or Hilton. Built into the hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the entire town comes to a point at the base of the hill to the San Clemente Pier, a massive pier extending about 250m out over the water. This is a great place to watch the sunset or the large amount of surfers who are on the waves from morning till night every day. There is a great seafood restaurant at the beginning of the pier called the Fisherman's which is a great spot to catch a beer and a fish sandwich while you are enjoying the view. See my separate review for the restaurant. Another key feature of the town, and a source of pride and constant subjects for local artists, is the BNSF / Amtrak railroad mainline that runs literally right along the beach.
