San Angelo, Texas has about 88,400 people (104,000 people in the whole area of Tom Green County) which makes it the largest city in Amercia that does not have an interstate freeway within 100 miles--so don't waste your time driving to San Angelo, always fly in! (Mathis Field, also known as San Angelo Regional Airport or SJT) It is also home to Goodfellow AFB which has no runways and historical Fort Concho from the early frontier town days. Fort Concho was also the headquarters of the 10th Cavalry, which comprised mainly of "buffalo soldiers."

Residents and students had to drive 100 miles to find the closest Olive Garden in Abilene, TX which is not much bigger but has I-20 running through it. It takes about 4 hours to get to San Antonio, Dallas or Houston by car. San Angelo boasts Angelo State University, 3 large lakes/reservoirs, cool pink-purple Concho River pearls (very expensive and the only other place to get pearls of the same color is a river in China), and an Air Force base without any active runways. How much fun is that?!?!?!?! I hear from people who move there on purpose find the city a great place to raise a family in a low cost, low crime area with good schools, which is a benefit of its isolation on the Texas plain.

The people of San Angelo are very friendly and they make some great homemade food, especially Tex-Mex and steaks of all sizes. San Angelo may not be a garden vacation spot but its the best little city in mid-Texas!
